Female drinkers

There are different fields in which women outperform men. But drinking is not one of those fields. It is a fact that alcohol affects women differently than men. Females can expect more alcohol-caused impairment than men after at equal levels of consumption.

The reasons behind this effect are:

• Women are smaller than men. So when equivalent doses of alcohol are consumed by both genders, the alcohol will produce higher levels of concentration in the female’s body. Women even tend to have worse hangovers than men the morning after

• The average female carries more body fat than the average male. Sorry ladies! Since body fat contains little water, most women have less body water to dilute the alcohol, leaving a higher concentration of alcohol in women's bodies.

• Alcohol dehydrogenase is a metabolizing enzyme that helps the body get alcohol out of its system. Women have less of this enzyme than men, so more of what women drink enters the bloodstream as pure alcohol.

• Fluctuating hormone levels in women means that the intoxicating effects of alcohol will set in faster when their estrogen levels are higher, premenstrually. Also, alcohol increases the estrogen levels- birth control pills or other medications with estrogen will cause the intoxicating effects to set in at lower levels of BAC

So in conclusion, women should look out after themselves and each other when consuming alcohol while going out. Here are some tips to keep you safe:

• Drink slowly! Order your favourite cocktail, hold onto it and drink slowly. Since you are drinking it slowly, you will not feel self conscious if everyone around you has a drink and feel the pressure of ordering drink after drink.

• Don’t have a cocktail every time your male friends order another beer. Many men try to me macho and show of how many beers they can drink, but actually women are drinking much more alcohol. Those cocktails might look frilly and sweet but they are actually more potent than beer.

• When drinking at a club or party at a venue, always have a designated driver or enough money to pay for a cab ride home. Money for the cab is even more essential when you are going home by yourself. Don’t forget to have enough money on your cell phone just in case you need to make a phone call.

• Never let your drink out of your sight. If someone want to buy you a drink, make sure you are present when the bartender pours the drink. If the person walks up to you with the drink already poured, kindly decline the drink.

• Drink enough to make dancing a lot of fun, but never more than that. You do not need to drink till you pass out. Make sure you know people at the party. You need to have someone who will make sure that you are safe.

• Think about your friends. If it seems as if all of your friends are drinking beyond their limit, you should stop in case they need you to help them. It may not be the most fun to be sober, but your friends will be incredibly grateful when you save them from any sticky situations that they may find themselves in. Stick to the buddy system

• If you’re drinking with people you don’t know or you are on a date, it’s even more important to set your own limits before you start drinking. You have the right to decide how much you want to drink.

• Let people (family or a friend) know where you will be and how to contact you.
